Empower Playgrounds

Starlink: Bridging the Digital Divide

Staring in February of 2026, we have installed Starlink internet at 3 rural schools; Luta, Pediatorkope, and Alorkpem.

This is what sustainable impact looks like.

Returning. Supporting. Investing with intention. Measuring results over time.

Each of these schools had computer labs installed several years ago, and merry-go-rounds years before that. At first, access to computers was the priority. Today, access to the internet is what unlocks the full potential of that investment.

Why Starlink?

The invention and popularization of Starlink in recent years is life-changing technology. Starlink, in their own words, “operates the world’s largest satellite constellation, with over 6,750 satellites currently in orbit, serving millions of active customers around the globe with high-speed, low-latency internet” (Starlink, 2026).

This satellite system allows you to put a router anywhere, even extremely remote areas like our schools locations, and connect to high speed internet. It has made it possible to connect students, teachers, and communities to the world they have been disconnected from.

Why install Starlink at schools?

As the world changes, we must also adapt to how we address education access. Reliable connectivity is already changing how students at these 3 schools engage with technology, expanding learning opportunities beyond the classroom and connecting them to the wider digital world.

On a visit to Luta about three months after our initial installation of Starlink, we had a meeting with the teachers. The feedback was phenomenal. Teachers shared that students are interacting on the computers like never before, and are even staying after school to learn how to work a Google search engine or look up a video on a subject they discussed in class that day.

But it doesn’t just benefit the students. Teachers also shared that Starlink has given them the opportunity to further their own education by taking online classes from universities in Ghana.

This milestone reflects how Empower Playgrounds works.

Luta, Pediatorkope, and Alorkpem are each one of 78 communities we have worked with consistently for more than 15 years. Our model is built on long-term relationships, ongoing training, and sustained support. We believe that as our world changes, we also must adapt to provide these communities with the resources they need to gain a complete education.

The installation of Starlink is not a standalone intervention. It builds on years of educational programming, infrastructure development, and local capacity building already in place. By working together with communities, our interventions become more and more impactful.

We are proud to continue growing alongside the communities we work in and are excited for what this next chapter of digital access makes possible!
