Girls' Education in Rural Ghana
Erika is a bright young girl who is eager to learn and reach her full potential. The Empower Playground's merry-go-round and lantern project has enabled Erika to catch up in school. She is now at the top of her class and excited to be heading to high school next year!

What can a lantern do?
In the US lanterns are used for camping, late nights in the back yard, adventuring, or emergencies. With the Empower Playgrounds merry-go-round system and the Tough Light lanterns - lanterns are used for so much more in rural Ghana, West Africa.
The Watchman
Empower Playgrounds partners with individuals and their communities to bring play light and learning to rural villages around Ghana, West Africa. Billy is a community leader on Kpala Island where he grew up. This is his story and his visition.
Bahankra Case Study
Empower Playgrounds first installed a Merry-go-round at Bahankra Primary School, located in the Ashanti region of Ghana in 2012. The school population was smaller than most of the schools EPI does installations at, but the transformation at Bahankra has been extraordinary.
Empower Playgrounds Ghana Team
Isaac Darko-Mensah and George Thompson are the two full-time employees in Ghana who make everything happen. Isaac is our country director and electrical engineer. He is responsible for many of the innovations made to the Empower Playground's charging system and the Village Solar Project. George is our Special Projects Director and construction manager.
Bahankra Borehole
According to Unicef, 300 million children suffer from illnesses caused by lack of clean water, poor nutrition and inadequate health services and care. If children are sick they cannot attend school. We work to provide children with access to clean water so they can stay healthy and stay in.

Empower Playgrounds History
In rural villages of Ghana, West Africa, children's educational opportunities are limited. They have to fetch water, farm, cook, and herd cattle in order to survive. In the village of Koni Kablu, none of the children has ever made it to high school. Empower Playgrounds seeks to solve this problem by providing schools with electricity-generating playground equipment.
