Adenkrebi
Region: Greater Accra
District: Ga West
Student body:
Installation: 2008
Notes: The city of Adenkrebi was one of Empower Playground's original pilot installation in 2008, and it has thereby created a special place for itself in EPI history. Perched atop a large hill, Adenkrebi overlooks the Ghanaian countryside. -
Adenya
Region: Eastern
District: Akuapem
Student body: 260 students (40 junior high)
Installation: June 2010
Notes: Unlike many rural schools in Ghana, teachers at Adenya live nearby and pupil attendance is regular. The Parent Teacher Associate in Adenya is also active and a food vendor brings children traditional Ghanaian snack foods each day at lunchtime. -
Aflive
Region:
District: Dangme East
Student body: 100
Installation: Notes: Aflive is a beautiful school on Prediatorkope Island, located on the Volta river. Because the island is so big, Aflive was more recently constructed as an alternative primary school to Prediatorkope school, which is located at the far side of the island from Aflive. As with many rural villages, the children of Aflive struggle for many of the basic necessities in life, but they are also dedicated to learning and excited about the light that EPI provides for evening studies. -
Alorkpem
Region: Greater Accra
District: Dangme West
Student body: 172 (45 junior high
Installation: December 2010
Notes: Largely supported by an NGO from the Netherlands, Alokpem has been blessed with a bright and beautiful campus relative to its rural counterparts. The classrooms are complete and well-built, strategically placed beside a large Boa-Boa tree. Teachers and citizens have furthermore stocked these classrooms with many objects and items that can be used for hands-on learning (e.g. scales, nicknacks and utensils). Furthermore, the teachers at Alokpem display outstanding dedication to the enrichment of their children; although they too struggle for amenities in rural Ghana, these teachers always seem to put the students first. Alorkpem is home to both an EPI merry-go-round, and an EPI swingset (both of which generate electricity). -
Amuyaokope
Region: Greater Accra
District: Dangme East
Student body: 246 (primary only)
Installation: 2010
Notes: Amuyaokope performs well in national academic testing, despite its rural and disadvantaged location. Classrooms are well constructed thanks to a supportive community, and mango trees are a decorative addition. School attendance is also very high. -
Anateem Sumbrungu
Region: Upper East Accra
District: Bogatonga
Student body:
Installation: September 2011
Notes: -
Akyeremateng
Region: Eastern
District: Akuapem
Student body: 150 (18 junior high)
Installation: November 2010
Notes: In order to reach the village of Akyeremateng, one must hike down into a valley full of thick tropical foliage, cross two streams and then hike back up a steep climb to the other side. Despite this rural locale, however, Akyeremateng is composed of honest and dedicated citizens who have put much time and energy into the infrastructure of their community. The primary school at Akyeremateng, for example, is located next to the hut homes of the villagers, making it easier for children to attend each day. The villagers have also built a library, which they hope eventually to fill with books. -
Apirede Nsutu
Region: Greater Accra
District: Akuapem
Student body: 83
Installation: Planned September
Notes: The Parent Teacher Association associated with Apirede Nsutu is very active and supportive, insisting that children do their homework before helping with chores each day. This is a rarity among rural villages who often depend on the labor of children to support their families. Furthermore, unlike many rural schools, the teachers at Apirede (many of whom come from bigger cities with electricity) have chosen to live in the village. -
Ataampuutum A/B
Region: Upper East
District: Bolgatonga
Student body:
Installation: September 2011
Notes: -
Attabui
Region: Eastern
District: Akuapem
Student body: 163 (33 junior high)
Installation: November 2011
Notes: A rarity among rural schools, Attabui has enough school textbooks for each child and an adequate number of teachers to provide small class sizes. We at EPI have been encouraged time and again by the excitement the children at Attabui have for learning. Even if they, like other rural children, must come late to school on market days, their teachers still indicate that students are dedicated and eager to learn. -
Azizakope
Region: Greater Accra
District: Dangme West District
Student body: 180
Installation: 2012
Notes: -
Dedenya
Region: Greater Accra
District: Ga East
Student body:
Installation: 2008
Notes: Dadenya is a school nestled within the rolling hills of the Ghanaian countryside. When children are older, they hunt in those hills for food to sell or feed their families with. During recess, the children of Dadenya love to play football and ride on the EPI merry-go-round. -
Essam
Region: Eastern
District: Ga West
Student body:
Installation: April 2008
Notes: Essam is one of the original pilot schools that EPI began work with in 2008. Since that time, Essam has had begun to develop and their future is bright. -
Katapor
Region: Greater Accra
District: Ga West
Student body:
Installation: 2008
Notes: An original pilot school for the EPI electricity-generating playground equipment, Katapor had a number of successful years using our equipment to bring light and learning to their children. EPI provided this village with play, light and learning for three years until the electricity grid was able to reach them in 2011. -
Koni Kablu
Region: Greater Accra
District: Ga East
Student body:
Installation: 2008
Notes:Koni Kablu is a very small village in the flatlands of the greater Accra region. In this village, many male children must raise a cow before they are permitted to attend primary school. Because of this, the classrooms are filled with children of various ages, all eager to learn. In 2009, Empower Playgrounds filmed part of our docu-drama "Abena" here at Koni Kablu. The children were very happy to later see themselves on the big screen at a Movie Night brought to them by EPI staff and a portable projector! -

Luta
Region: Greater Accra
District: Dangme East
Student body: 186
Installation: 2010
Notes: Luta has children who, despite heavy rain, market days and other impediments of locale, are dedicated to attending school each day. We at EPI were impressed by this dedication and proud to give these children a greater chance to learn with light and science equipment. -
Madavunu
Region: Greater Accra
District: Dangme East
Student body: 155 (28 junior high)
Installation: November 2010
Notes: Madavunu was one of the first schools in Ghana to receive the new Empower Playgrounds equipment, manufactured by Playworld Systems Inc. The excitement exhibited by the citizens for both the playground and the opportunity it provides for learning was clearly displayed when people of all ages came together in celebration for its installation. -
Minya
Region: Greater Accra
District: Ga East
Student body:
Installation: 2008
Notes: The campus of Minya school is situated in a large stretch of flat brown land, but the front yard of the school is landscaped with mango trees. The addition of an Empower Playgrounds merry-go-round has added the first piece of play equipment for these children to enjoy during recess and before they walk home in the afternoon. -
Nyariga Girls School
Region: Upper East
District: Bolgatonga
Student body:
Installation: November 2010
Notes: Nyariga is a unique school for EPI because it is an all girls school. This is a wonderful institution for a nation that has historically been unsupportive of female education. Recent years have seen a surge in female empowerment for Ghana, however, and Nyariga is a example of this wonderful advancement. Installed with inspiration and help from the Blessing Basket Project, EPI is proud to be a part of this community! -
Obane
Region: Greater Accra
District: Dangme East
Student body:
Notes: Obane holds a special place in the memory of EPI because this installation was a team effort with our friends at Operation Love in Action. Operation Love in Action is a sustainable NGO that aids orphans in rural Ghana by providing an environment for education, agricultural growth and healthcare. -
Pediatorkope
Region: Greater Accra
District: Dangme East - Island school
Student body:
Installation: November 2009 Notes: Prediatorkope is an island on the Volta river. Children here often help their families fish with large nets and paddle boats during the afternoon and evening. Crabs and coconuts are dietary staples for the citizens of this area, and they are a delicious treat for EPI employees when visiting. As our first island school, the installation of EPI equipment to Prediatorkope was facilitated by the dedicated citizens of the area. With demonstrable excitement, these parents and friends donated their time, boats and man power to transport and install the fun! Now home to both a merry-go-round and a swing set (each generating electricity), the children and villagers of Prediatorkope have grasped onto the concept of EPI as a child-focused development tool. One of our favorite EPI anecdotes comes from Prediatorkope, when one of our employees, Chris, decided to spend the night and take pictures of children using their lanterns. When a villager saw Chris with a lantern going from place to place, he reprimanded him, saying, “Those are only for the kids!” -
Penim
Region: Central
District: Awutu-Senya
Student body: 240 (primary only)
Installation: 2010
Notes: Most children at Penim live nearby the school, and teachers are very friendly. Unlike many rural schools, clean water is available readily for the children at Penim, and there is a small library of books for them to read during school hours. -
Todjer
Region: Greater Accra
District: Dangme East
Student body: 159
Installation: 2010 Notes: Teachers at Todjer school must ride their bike for 30 minutes each day before they begin work, but they still arrive with a bustle of energy for the children to feed off of. The PTA is likewise energetic and the children seem to benefit from this by putting confidence in their future. Privileged by a government feeding program, the children at Todjer have no trouble playing on the EPI equipment for recess! -
Terhey
Region: Greater Accra
District: Dangme East
Student body: 134 (primary only)
Installation: 2010 Notes: Terhey has fantastic teachers! We would never underestimate the potential of any child, but we know the worth of a good teacher and Terhey certainly has them. Four of these teachers even live in bungalows attached to the school itself. The first time an EPI representative arrived at Terhey, one of the teachers was instructing students about electricity--a commodity that neither he nor the students were provided with at home. We at EPI are now happy to provide these teachers and students with a merry-go-round that can act not only as a hands on science lab for electricity lessons, but also as a generator to give light in their homes at night. -

Mongpong Shai
Region: Greater Accra
District: Dangme West
Student body: 250 (30+ junior high)
Installation: 2010 Notes: Not only is Mongpong Shai our favorite school name to pronounce, but it is also a wonderful place for rural children to grow. Most children at Mongpong Shai are provided with their own exercise books, and all are blessed with a very dedicated headmaster. The teachers at Mongpong Shai live in bungalows set up for them by the villagers, and organized sports activities are offered as an after-school treat. -
